Common Childhood Dental Issues
Understanding the most common dental problems children face helps parents take preventive action early.
Early Childhood Caries
Also called baby bottle tooth decay β caused by prolonged exposure to sugary liquids like milk, juice, or formula in bottles.
Thumb Sucking
Prolonged thumb sucking beyond age 4 can push teeth forward, affect jaw growth, and cause open bite or protrusion.
Tongue Thrusting
Abnormal tongue position during swallowing pushes teeth forward over time, causing spacing and bite problems.
Poor Brushing Habits
Children often lack the dexterity or motivation to brush properly, leaving plaque that causes cavities and gum inflammation.
Sugary Diet
Frequent consumption of candies, chocolates, biscuits, and sugary drinks feeds cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth.
Dental Trauma
Falls, sports injuries, and accidents can chip, crack, or knock out children’s teeth β requiring immediate dental care.
Genetic Factors
Inherited traits can affect tooth enamel strength, jaw size, tooth alignment, and susceptibility to cavities.
Delayed Tooth Eruption
Some children’s teeth emerge later than expected, which may indicate nutritional, developmental, or genetic factors.
Your Child’s Dental Visit β Step by Step
We’ve designed every step to be fun, gentle, and fear-free. Here’s what to expect during your child’s visit.
Warm Welcome
Your child is welcomed into our child-friendly waiting area with toys and books. They meet the dentist β no scary instruments in sight. We build trust before anything else.
Gentle Examination
We check your child’s teeth, gums, and bite development. We make it fun β letting them hold the mirror and count their teeth together. No pain, no pressure.
Cleaning & Fluoride
Soft, tickly cleaning to remove plaque. Then a tasty fluoride varnish is painted on teeth to strengthen enamel. Your child gets a sticker reward for being brave!
X-Ray if Needed
For older children (6+), we may take low-radiation digital X-rays to check between teeth and monitor developing adult teeth. Quick and completely safe.
Treatment if Required
If sealants or fillings are needed, we explain everything in kid-friendly language (“we’re painting your tooth” or “we’re cleaning the sugar bugs”). Gentle and pain-free.
Parent Consultation
We discuss findings with you, share home care tips, recommend dietary changes if needed, and schedule the next visit. Every question answered.
After Your Child’s Treatment
Most pediatric dental treatments require minimal recovery. Here’s what to expect after each type of procedure.
After Cleaning
Immediate: Normal activities right away. Teeth may feel extra clean and smooth. No restrictions needed.
After Fluoride
30 minutes: No eating or drinking for 30 minutes. This allows fluoride to fully absorb into the enamel for maximum protection.
After Filling
2β3 hours: Numb from anesthesia. Soft foods only until sensation returns. Watch that your child doesn’t bite their lip or cheek while numb.
After Extraction
24 hours: Soft foods only. No straws (suction can dislodge the clot). Gentle salt water rinses after 24 hours. Mild discomfort is normal.

Frequently Asked Questions
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing. This early visit is mainly for parents β we’ll guide you on proper cleaning, feeding, and what to expect. It’s quick, gentle, and sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
Children should visit the dentist every 6 months for checkups and cleaning. Regular visits help catch cavities early, apply preventive treatments like fluoride and sealants, and monitor the development of teeth and jaws. If your child is prone to cavities, we may recommend more frequent visits.
Yes. We use digital X-rays which emit very low radiation β significantly less than traditional X-rays. We also use lead aprons and thyroid collars for extra protection. X-rays are only taken when clinically necessary (usually from age 5β6 onwards) and help us detect problems between teeth and check developing adult teeth.
Dental sealants are thin, protective plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars). They seal the deep grooves where food and bacteria get trapped, preventing cavities. The application is quick, painless, and requires no drilling. Sealants can last several years and are highly recommended for children as soon as their permanent molars come in (around age 6 and 12).
Yes, fluoride is safe and beneficial when used appropriately. It strengthens tooth enamel and prevents cavities. For children under 3, use a smear of fluoride toothpaste. For ages 3β6, use a pea-sized amount. Professional fluoride varnish applied at the dentist is completely safe and provides extra protection. We always use age-appropriate doses.
For babies: wipe gums with a clean, damp cloth after feeding. Once teeth appear, use a soft baby toothbrush with a smear of fluoride toothpaste. For toddlers and older children: brush twice daily with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, using gentle circular motions. Supervise brushing until age 7β8 β children don’t have the dexterity to do it properly alone. Make it fun β use a timer or a song!
Thumb sucking is normal in infants and toddlers. Most children stop on their own by age 3β4. If it continues beyond age 4, it can affect tooth alignment and jaw development. We provide gentle habit counseling and, if needed, appliances to help your child stop. The earlier we address it, the better the outcome β don’t wait until permanent teeth come in.
Call us immediately at +91 99362 93232. For a knocked-out tooth, pick it up by the crown (not the root), rinse gently, and try to reinsert it or store in milk. Get to us within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving it. For other injuries (chipped tooth, pain, swelling), call us and we’ll guide you on what to do. We’re open 7 days including Sundays for emergencies.
Absolutely! Baby teeth are crucial β they help children chew properly, speak clearly, and smile confidently. They also hold space for adult teeth. If a baby tooth is lost too early due to decay, adjacent teeth can shift into the space, causing crowding and alignment problems for adult teeth. That’s why we treat baby teeth with the same care as adult teeth.
Prevent cavities by: (1) Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, (2) Flossing daily once teeth touch, (3) Limiting sugary foods and drinks, (4) Encouraging water over juice, (5) Regular 6-month dental checkups, (6) Sealants on permanent molars, (7) Fluoride treatments at dental visits, (8) Never putting baby to bed with a milk bottle.
